Through Gavin’s Eyes

(My Son with Autism)
By:  Teri Sibenaller
from my chapbook, "Deep November"

I stand among you,

striving to let go

of my mother’s hands,

to be free to live

included to learn

enabled, learned courage

to make a new friend,

choices, so aggravating

black and white please,

clear and simple

but this prismatic world
G L O W S and SCREAMS

inside my head,

please understand

we all are different,

possess similar emotions

amplified by neurology

not transverse,

this body, not a wall

eyes may wander

words may lack

but the soul here cares,

just give me a chance

brothers and sisters,

I stand among you.
